PCC 2008 Annual Report

A message from your board

Your board of trustees is pleased to report that the year 2008 was among our cooperative’s most successful in its 56-year history. We thank PCC’s members and staff for your contributions to this success.

In addition to the financial gains detailed in this Annual Report, PCC made noteworthy progress in other aspects of its operations. Those aware of PCC’s commitment to environmental stewardship will recall that our store in Redmond was the first-ever grocery store to receive the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED® (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Gold Certification. In the 21 months since earning that recognition, several grocery retailers around the country have built their own LEED-certified stores. With our new store in Edmonds expected to be the first in the country to qualify for LEED Platinum Certification, PCC sets a new green building standard for the industry.

Our cooperative’s commitment to sustainability reaches beyond its own operations. In the past year, PCC has spoken out on proposed changes to regulations on genetically modified crops, policies regarding sustainability in the organic food trade, and candidates for possible appointment to critical positions within the U.S. Department of Agriculture. That PCC’s voice, involvement, and partnership are increasingly sought on issues of food policy and public health attests to the trust our cooperative has established with regional and national policymakers.

The past year also saw your board and management intensify efforts to define and advance a thoughtful, progressive agenda for social responsibility. We can assure you that PCC will continue to promote the well-being of the communities it serves and to support causes that reflect the shared values of its members.

Despite the climate of economic uncertainty that has settled upon us, our cooperative remains fully committed to its pledge to do well — and do good. We thank you for the opportunity to serve you.
