Genetically engineered animals

The first engineered animal for human consumption – a genetically engineered salmon — is recommended for approval by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

This engineered salmon has genes from two other species:

PCC Natural Markets has pledged not to sell genetically engineered fish in our stores. Nearly 60 other grocery chains with 4,662 stores across the United States also have pledged not to carry GE salmon. The FDA is expected to issue final approval very soon.

Genetic experiments on other livestock animals, including cows, pigs, sheep and goats, also are underway, raising questions and concerns about humane animal treatment and welfare.

See PCC’s comments to the FDA, detailing concerns about the impact of genetic engineering on GE salmon.
