Genetically engineered crops

There are four genetically engineered fresh produce items that may appear in grocery stores — one fruit and three vegetables.

Additional crops used to make corn syrup, high fructose corn syrup, granulated sugar, canola or soy oil, and minor processing ingredients also are genetically engineered:

In development

Many more genetically engineered foods are in development. There are hundreds of open-air experiments underway across the country.

In Washington state, there are dozens of experiments for more genetically engineered crops — including wheat, apples, pears, potatoes, barley, safflower, mint, alder and poplar trees.
