2013 nominating committee candidates

The nominating committee’s responsibilities are to recruit and screen candidates for PCC’s Board of Trustees. Committee members are elected for one year.

Below are the candidates for the 2013 election:

Janet Hietter

I value PCC not only as a source for nourishing food, but also as a model of how a cooperative business committed to sustainability, natural and human resources can thrive and enhance our community. Trustees to the Board are important in setting the long range vision of PCC and promoting its continued success. As a member of the nominating committee I would assist in recruiting, interviewing and selecting board candidates for presentation to PCC membership. I served this role in four previous years and would enthusiastically welcome serving again.

Prior work experience includes 18 years in human resources (HR) management in technology and university settings and 4 years owning and operating a small organic clothing business. In my role as a senior HR director at Microsoft, I provided guidance and counsel to executives on organizational and leadership issues, and managed a diverse team in delivering HR services for 7500 employees, including training and development, employee relations, recruiting, performance management and compensation.

My education includes: B.A. from The Ohio State University; Executive Leadership Program from Seattle University; and a Certified Compensation Professional.

I enjoy contributing to PCC and want to share my skills and experience by serving on the nominating committee.

Tom Monahan

For the past two years, I have served on PCC's nominating committee. It's been a tremendous experience, working with a dedicated group of fellow committee members and meeting with passionate PCC members who have an interest in board candidacy.

I’ve worked at PCC on a variety of projects, programs and events for nine years, first as part of our Community Relations team, now as Marketing Manager. Paired with my nominating committee experience, I've had the good fortune to see the co-op's work on many different levels.

Before my tenure at PCC, I worked five years at Woodland Park Zoo in event production and earned a B.A. in Business Administration from Seattle University. My experience in the grocery business even dates back to my youth: throughout high school and college I worked my way up from courtesy clerk to frozen food manager at a major grocery store.

PCC’s growth and continued success is a result of dedicated staff, engaged members and thoughtful leadership. By maintaining and appointing strong leaders, I believe PCC can continue to achieve success, as well as set new standards for the natural and organic food industries.

Don Nordness

I originally joined PCC as a member in the mid-1970s, and over the years, I’ve worked with the organization in a variety of ways. In the 1980’s I was employed by the co-op’s largest supplier. In the 1990’s, I worked for many of the manufacturers that produce the products that PCC sells. Later, from 2008 through 2010, I had the good fortune to serve on the nominating committee for the Board of Trustees.

Each of these experiences has given me insight into what it takes to operate a great co-operative, as well as a great chain of retail stores. A knowledgeable, dedicated staff and management are certainly essential. But my experience serving on the nominating committee has also made me aware of the significant role played by the trustees.

A variety of strengths and skills are important in creating a dynamic, effective board. The nominating committee identifies candidates that will complement and enhance our board’s existing skill set. I would like to contribute to the process of putting such candidates forward, and I would be honored to serve on the nominating committee this year.

Mary Simon

It is a privilege to submit my name as a PCC nominating committee candidate. PCC is unique in many ways. I believe it is an important part of the Seattle community and plays a vital role in this country’s sustainable food supply. PCC’s focus on serving customers, community, and staff while maintaining its commitment to the environment is unique and I think a great model for other coops and healthy food businesses. PCC’s product standards are demanding. They provide a higher level of safety to PCC’s consumers than any other retail outlet. We in the Seattle area are lucky to be able to shop at PCC!

I am a retired programmer/engineer and ombudsman from AT&T Bell Labs/Lucent Technologies. For 17 years, I worked as a neutral to solve disputes in the work place. My experience with negotiation, conflict resolution and organizational development was helpful when I was elected to the Board of Trustees in 2003. I served a full 3-year term, becoming chair of the board in my third year. I have been on the nominating committee for 2 years now, serving as chair last year and it would be an honor to continue to serve PCC for another year.

Julie Tempest

It is an honor to serve on the current PCC nominating committee and I would like to return for a second term. My background includes public policy, business management and marketing consulting for the organic and natural products industry. I received an MBA from the University of Washington.

The Nominating Committee is tasked with recruiting, interviewing and selecting highly qualified PCC members to run for the Board of Trustees. I gained a deep understanding of PCC’s policy governance model, board leadership, membership values and the long-term vision of the co-op during my service on the PCC board from 2004-2009. This experience provided me with valuable insights for developing the criteria and selection process for new board candidates, as well as personally evaluating their commitment to PCC’s values. I feel very confident in the process and the candidates that our nominating committee put forward for the PCC membership to consider.

As a PCC member since 1999, I am committed to preserving the long-term health and sustainability of the co-op through strong board leadership. My background combined with my board and nominating committee experience give me a unique perspective when evaluating future trustees for PCC. Thank you for considering me for service on the 2013-14 nominating committee.

Visionary leadership from our board and nominating committee members will play a major role in the success of our co-op in the coming years.
