Kids welcome this tasty treat any time, and parents appreciate that it’s packed with protein and fiber. It’s also a fun, hands-on recipe that even very young children can make. PCC Chef Jackie Freeman invited Sameeksha and her mother Padmaja to the kitchen to help prepare this naturally sweet snack.

Nutrition & fun facts

  • Bananas are one of the weirdest fruits. We say they grow on trees, but technically the “tree” has no wood. Scientists call it an herb.
  • Bananas are a good source for vitamin B6. Our bodies don’t store this vitamin well, so daily intake is a good idea. Add banana slices to pancakes instead of blueberries, or whirl up a kid-friendly banana milkshake.
  • Wild bananas grow in all sorts of wonderful colors and flavors in Indonesia and the Philippines. There’s even a fuzzy pink one.

Nutrition & fun facts

  • White cauliflower is the most common color, but it also comes in purple, green and orange. An Arab botanist named Ibn al-'Awwam wrote about cauliflower cultivation more than 800 years ago, in one of the very first gardening books.
  • Mark Twain called it "nothing but cabbage with a college education."
  • Cauliflower supplies good amounts of everything from protein to niacin to vitamin C. It can be a real boon to parents of picky eaters, since it’s mild flavor and color don’t set off kid alarm bells.
